The ASICS brand has become world renown as a leader in footwear. Their products not only carry out the duty of your average shoe, but also help to seek excellence in athletic performances, day to day activities, running, fitness training, and much more. The ASICS brand was founded in Japan in 1949. An acronym for the Latin phrase gives the brand its characteristic acronym: “anima sana in corpore san,” or “a healthy mind in a healthy body.” This philosophy embodies the high quality, high performance nature of ASICS products, which span the gauntlet from everyday sneakers to high performance athletic running shoes. In this article, we’ll take a look at some of ASICS lightweight running shoes for men.
Having the right pair of running shoes is the key to getting the most out of your experience as a runner. In addition to protecting the foot, a good pair of running shoes is specially designed to make each step more efficient, allowing you to get the most out of your stride. This is accomplished by carefully engineering a shoe which reacts beneficially with the normal biomechanics of running. To this end, the shoe is designed to allow for flexibility, to put shock absorbers in key places in order to transfer energy back into the next step while removing potentially harmful shocks. The shoe must also be well ventilated to remain breathable, and lightweight as to not impede the muscles with too much “dead weight.” Below, we will examine some offerings from ASICS catalog which offers all of these features and more.
1. GEL-LYTE33 3 – Designed for the neutral or underpronator.
ASICS GEL-LYTE33 3’s are an interesting pair of shoes to look at. Available in three bold color schemes, these are a somewhat eye-catching pair of shoes well equipped for all the trials of a serious run. Weighing in at just 6.8 ounces, the Lyte33’s definitely live up to their name. These featherweights are jam packed with all the bells and whistles to ensure a smooth, comfortable run. Innovations such as the seamless upper and Solyte midsole offer incredible weight reduction without compromising the excellence performance, traction, durability and shock absorption expected from a high quality pair of running shoes.
ASICS has taken a careful study of the human anatomy and used these details in a clever fashion in order to produce the best running enhancement device possible. For example, on the bottom of the shoe we find ASICS FluidAxis technology, which features deep “flex grooves” designed to specifically support the natural anatomy of the foot by being aligned to the joints of the foot. This seemingly simple innovation allows the shoe to organically respond to the exact weight distribution of each motion, providing a smoother and more efficient run.
2. GEL-EXCEL33 3 – Designed for the neutral or underpronator.
Like the LYTE33 3’s above, the GEL-EXCEL33 3’s feature ASICS clever FluidAxis technology. A bit heavier than the LYTE33 3’s, the GEL-EXCEL’s weigh in at 8.9 ounces – still so light you’ll probably forget it’s there after a bit of wear. The small weight addition is well accounted for in features. ASICS FluidRide midsole puts some serious spring in your step, ideally distributing energy to reduce shock and provide a bit of bounce to each step. Combined with the Rearfoot GEL cushioning system, the EXCEL33’s manage to be truly exceptional in shock absorption throughout the whole body of the shoe, providing excellent spring and transferring very little shock to the feet and legs, which can lead to injuries and fatigue.
To round off the package, the EXCEL33’s are equipped with a ComforDry sockliner, providing moisture management and anti-microbial properties to keep the shoes fresh and odor free. Seamless construction acts to reduce weight while also removing some of the potential irritations and wear caused by traditional seamed designs.
3. GEL-PURSUE – Designed for the neutral.
The heaviest on our list so far, the GEL-PURSUE’s weigh in at 10.7 ounces – still a lightweight, no doubt, but almost tipping our scale. While definitely a bit heavier than some previous selections, the PURSUE’s are sure to use this extra mass wisely. The PURSUE’s are designed for the runner who is looking for a more responsive ride.
Combining ASICS technologies like Guidance Line and Guidance Trusstic, the PURSUE’s offer exceptional support, enhance gait efficiency, provide midfoot structural integrity, improve stability and offer comfort even on long duration runs. The rear of the shoe offers the Heel Clutching System, an excellent design incorporating an exoskeleton over the heel to improve support and heel fitting.
4. GEL-FORTITUDE – severe overpronator heavy weight
Coming in at 12 ounces, we have doubled in weight since our ultra light that started this list off. However, the FORTITUDE’s are an incredible offering which is all about versatility. This is a “full support” shoe – designed to pack every feature possible in to offer the utmost support and protection to keep you running comfortably, even for long durations. To this end, the FORTITUDE’s are designed with a very broad and neutral base of support.
The shoes unique geometry allows the shoe to accommodate orthotics and ensures a quality fit. Also features ASICS Rearfoot and Forefoot GEL cushioning technology for optimal shock absorption and energy transfer. Extremely versatile, the FORTITUDE’s cam accommodates the severe overpronator or the larger-framed runner.
5. GEL-EXALT – Designed for the mild to moderate overpronator.
The EXALT’s are a beautiful running shoe that won’t break the bank. Despite its fairly low price tag, the EXALT’s lack for none of the excellent features which make ASICS a leading name. At 10.7 ounces, the EXALT’s are impressively light for being such a stellar performer in terms of support and stability.
The DuoMax support system ensures an efficient and comfortable stride, while the Rearfoot GEL cushioning system provides optimal shock absorption, support and a bit of bounce. Inside the shoe we find a SpEVA midsole designed to improve bounce back characteristics and provide excellent cushioning and support to the midfoot. On the bottom we find AHAR – or ASICS High Abrasion Rubber – acting to reinforce the bottom of the shoe at key points. AHAR is an extremely durable material which provides exceptional traction and is used to enhance durability in locations on the shoe particularly prone to wear.
6. GEL-CUMULUS 16
The sixteenth iteration of ASICS award winning CUMULUS line, the CUMLUS 16’s are an improvement on a long lasting design. Featuring a FluidRide midsole, Rearfoot and Forefoot GEL cushioning, a new and improved Guidance Trusstic system, Guidance Line technology, ComforDry Sockliner – the CUMULUS 16’s practically have it all. The result of all this technology is an exceptionally high performance running shoe which weighs in at just 10.6 ounces – exceptionally light for something is feature packed.
With superb shock absorption, excellent energy transfer, impeccable durability and brilliant attention to biomechanics, the CUMULUS 16’S offer everything you could want from a running shoe – and more.
ASICS is a winning name in running shoes. Their excellent products make it almost hard to go wrong. However, it is always important to make sure you get the right pair of running shoes. The ideal pair will perfectly compliment your feet, accommodating both the physical dimensions of the foot itself as well as the intricate biomechanical action of running. Quality running shoes must be light, well ventilated, conform to the foots anatomy, and designed to accommodate your gait. Always take care when selecting running shoes to note if they are for neutral or under/overpronator. The type of gait can be important in the design of the shoe, so ensure you get the best out of your investment by selecting the type of footwear which works best with your body.
